What is an electric arc? What are the hazards of electric arc and what are the common methods of arc extinguishing

Sep 25 , 2024

An electric arc is a conductive phenomenon formed by the interaction of free electrons and ions in a gas or air under high voltage. When current passes through a gas, the electric field ionizes the atoms or molecules in the gas, generating a large number of free electrons, thus forming an electric arc. Electric arcs are usually bright and high in temperature, which can reach thousands of degrees Celsius. They are widely used in welding, cutting and various electrical equipment.

Hazards of electric arcs

1. High temperature damage: The high temperature generated by the arc can cause the surrounding materials to melt or burn. For example, when electrical equipment fails, the arc may burn the insulation layer of the wire, causing a short circuit or fire.

2. Fire risk: The heat generated by the arc is enough to ignite the surrounding flammable materials and cause a fire accident. In some industrial environments, fires caused by arcs are an important safety hazard.

3. Electric shock hazard: When operating live equipment, if you accidentally touch the arc, it may cause severe electric shock and even endanger your life.

4. Equipment damage: The arc not only burns cables and insulation materials, but also may cause serious damage to electronic components, leading to equipment failure and increased maintenance costs.

5. Produce harmful gases: The high temperature of the arc can cause certain materials to decompose and release toxic gases such as nitrogen oxides and ozone, which pose a threat to the health of operators.

Common methods of arc extinguishing

1. Reduce voltage: By reducing the voltage in the circuit, the possibility of arc formation can be reduced. This is usually achieved through a transformer or voltage regulator.

2. Use arc extinguisher: An arc extinguisher is a device specially designed to extinguish arcs and is commonly used in high-voltage switchgear. It effectively suppresses arcs by changing the path of the arc or cooling the temperature of the arc.

3. Increase contact pressure: Increasing contact pressure in electrical connections can reduce contact resistance and reduce the possibility of arc formation. Good contact design can effectively reduce the risk of arcs.

4. Use insulating materials: The use of high-quality insulating materials can effectively prevent the occurrence of arcs. The use of high-temperature and arc-resistant insulating materials in electrical equipment and cables can help prevent damage caused by arcs.

5. Install protective devices: Installing protective devices such as fuses and circuit breakers in the circuit can quickly cut off the power supply when the current exceeds the safe value, thereby preventing the formation of arcs.

6. Regular maintenance and inspection: Regular maintenance and inspection of electrical equipment to ensure that the equipment is in good working condition, timely detection and handling of potential faults can effectively reduce the occurrence of arcs.

7. Education and training: Educating and training employees on electrical safety knowledge to improve their awareness of arc risks can effectively reduce the occurrence of accidents.

Arc is a high-energy electrical phenomenon. Although it plays an important role in some industrial applications, its potential hazards cannot be ignored. By taking effective protection and arc extinguishing measures, the hazards caused by arcs can be minimized to ensure personnel safety and normal operation of equipment. In practical applications, combining a variety of methods and technical means will help create a safer working environment.
