What are the working principles, advantages and disadvantages of air circuit breakers?

     Air circuit breakers are an important electrical protection device, widely used in power distribution systems, mainly used to cut off current to prevent faults such as overload and short circuit. The basic working principle of air circuit breakers is to use air as a medium, and when a fault occurs in the circuit, quickly cut off the current to protect the circuit and equipment. Its structure mainly includes conductive parts, mechanical parts and electrical control parts.


1. Conductive part: The air circuit breaker is equipped with a conductor, and when the current is normal, the current flows through the conductor.

2. Fault detection: When the current exceeds the set value, the overload and short circuit protection device of the air circuit breaker will quickly sense this change and start the electrical control part.

3. Operation mechanism: The electrical control part will activate the mechanical part, and the circuit breaker will quickly disconnect the circuit through the electromagnetic mechanism or spring device. At this time, the current flow is cut off, avoiding equipment damage.

4. Arc extinguishing: During the disconnection process, an arc will be formed due to the presence of current. The air circuit breaker quickly eliminates the arc through air cooling and arc extinguishing devices to ensure the safety and reliability of the circuit breaker.


Advantages

1. High safety: Air circuit breakers can quickly cut off the current at the moment of short circuit or overload, prevent damage to circuits and equipment, and improve the safety of the system.

2. Strong reliability: Due to its simple structure and convenient maintenance, air circuit breakers have a low failure rate and can work normally in harsh environments.

Disadvantages

1. Large size: Compared with other types of circuit breakers (such as oil circuit breakers or vacuum circuit breakers), air circuit breakers are larger in size and require high installation space.

2. Long arc extinguishing time: Although there is an arc extinguishing device, the arc extinguishing time is still long under high current conditions, which may affect the cutting speed.

3. Performance is affected by the environment: The performance of air circuit breakers will be affected by environmental factors such as temperature and humidity, and their reliability may be reduced under extreme conditions.

4. High maintenance frequency: Although maintenance is relatively simple, due to the structural characteristics of air circuit breakers, regular inspection and maintenance are still required to ensure their normal operation.


As an effective electrical protection device, air circuit breakers play an important role in power systems. Although it has advantages such as high safety and strong reliability, it also has disadvantages such as large size and long arc extinguishing time.
